Graphics
The graphics are amazing. Any photo shot of the graphics will remind you of the comic itself, alive and vibrant - ready to come out and strike at a moment's notice. Small transitions from Spawn's cape turned Axe and back again, and blood dripping from Spawn's axe after slicing up some demons and returning his axe to it's resting place on his back is just a small amount of testimony to the amount of detail and attention paid to the game's art department. Simply amazing.
Gameplay
As in Dead to Rights, the control scheme was a bit off. Pressing right makes you look left and pressing up makes you look down and vicey versy. Even though it's not a terribly big deal, there is no way to change this for people who prefer the inverted method of control. But the attacks and jumping were pretty precise, hitting and holding the jump button makes Spawn reveal his trademark living symbiote cape from the axe on his back. I don't know if it was my controller or not but it seemed like sometimes the jump button wasn't as responsive as normal in a few places. And wall jumping was weird sometimes as well. Some walls you can't kick off of.
Sound
The ambient noise in the game will give you nightmares alone. You can hear what sounds like the clown laughing in the background at times, and children/women screaming at points, animals in the background, etc. etc... Really great stuff. And the music was good too, it includes a song from Marilyn Manson. I'm not a big fan of him, but he does make good music to slice demons up to.
Fun Factor/Replay Value
I love Spawn, I read and collect Spawn comics, I own the movie and the HBO cartoon series. Spawn is the man. This game is a near perfect translation of the comics and I don't have many complaints about the game at all. Just a few here and there but this is definitely a great game so far. I am currently on the Forest/Central Park stage. So I'm not finished yet, but almost. I'm going to try to beat it tomorrow. I gave my arm a muscle cramp from playing so much today.
Overall Impressions
Spawn fans rejoice, your game is here. Go buy it now, you won't be disappointed. (I'm not getting paid for you buying a copy of the game, and yet I'm telling you to go and buy it. That's how good it is.)
Liked
Everything.
Disliked
Practically Nothing. If I had to choose a few, I'd say that more use of the Clown/Violator character would have been cool. One or two bosses could have been cooler, and more main characters could have been used. Cy-Gor and Violator were too big. Where's Jason Wynn? Where's Wanda, Terry, and Cyan? Where's Cogliostro? And why does Spawn have to jump over so much stuff when he can just teleport, or do his "fade into the shadows" trick? Other than those few notes, this game totally rocked! Thumbs up to Namco and Spawn's creator Todd, and everybody else involved in this project!!!
