810 Dane Snoopdawwg22@a GameCube <subtitle>Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater 3<subtitle> <content>The Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater franchise has been one of the most successful, if not the most successful, series in video games over the past five years. The original and sequel were named Game of the Year from a great number of critics, and each follow-up seems to be getting more and more hype. Neversoft has succeeded in adding new key features to each game and \"expanded upon perfection\" in the eyes of many, and is looking to keep the franchise fresh in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3. The first thing I\'d like to address is what I think of as the biggest problem with THPS3. The three primary elements that seem to be improved in every new Tony Hawk game are as follows: better graphics, generally in character models and environments; a new trick-expanding move, this time the revert, which allows players to come out of a ramp trick with a manual and having the option of keeping two or more vert tricks linked, and bigger levels--this is the one that bothers me. The first two games of the series were great, in my opinion, because the goals that needed to be accomplished to advance to the next level were usually easily understood and only sometimes difficult to actually pull off. Now though, with massive land areas to cover, memorizing locations of S-K-A-T-E letters and other item-collecting goals takes some time and can be very repetitive. Secret tapes are very difficult to locate because of this, and with level goals like \"Help the thin man,\" unnecessary frustration can set in, especially when trying to finish every goal in the game. From my experience with Tony Hawk 3, I firmly believe that Neversoft should have kept the level size similar to the two before it. While the game as a whole can be considered to have nice visuals, there\'s no real graphical flare to be found. I guess you could say I\'m a \"sucker\" for eye candy, and wasn\'t at all impressed or turned off by Tony Hawk 3\'s look. Compared to most other GCN games it looks great, but I wouldn\'t advise buying it to try and show off the \'Cube\'s power or anything. Its frame rate doesn\'t suffer hardly at all, with the small exception of a couple issues in the Los Angeles level. Pop-up is nonexistent--as well it should be--and backgrounds are relatively well-detailed. One technical problem is the unbearably constant skater animation when running into a wall. Sometimes, in narrow areas or in places without much room, it\'s all too easy to bump into one a couple times. Sadly and annoyingly, no matter at what speed you nudge something the character does a real dramatic balancing act in which the arms flail back and head flies forward (while staying on the board, luckily). When trying to navigate over building roofs where one little mistake can mean having to do the whole process of getting there all over again (ex. looking for the \"secret tape\"), this can be both irritating and lethal. Now that we\'ve got the bad behind us, it\'s time to take a look at the many things that Neversoft did a great job on. As already mentioned, the \"revert\" was added this time around. Utilizing this new feature, you can pull off a trick off of a ramp, press the R shoulder button slightly before you land, and start a manual to ride towards the next rail or ramp. This means that trick combinations are limited only to the amount of time that you can keep your balance on a rail or manual. Million point combos are possible, and this makes for some incredible strategy and much needed precision. I spent quite a while just seeing how many points I could get with just one trick combo (608,804), and suspect that most gamers will do the same. Again, the ability to create a skater from scratch is present, and the feature is very well done. Pretty much everything about the created character can be tweaked with, so those that don\'t want to take the role of an already-pro skater can have their requests satisfied. In addition, you can make your own skate park from scratch. Tony Hawk 2 had a nice Park Editor, but this one has much more to it. It\'s a great feature to mess around with, but if you\'re anything like me you\'ll find making it look as fancy as possible doesn\'t always make it the most successful, and won\'t use the well-intended feature much after the initial effort. These two options are appreciated, though. Music’s been one of the key elements to the franchise, and once again it turned out well. I\'m not a huge music fan, don\'t own a handful of CDs, but still found the tunes to be catchy and fitting for the kind of game that Tony Hawk 3 is. Sound effects, as I often find myself saying when reviewing games, are pretty good. Grinds sound like grinds sound (strangely though, the skater picks up speed at an incredible rate while grinding), and the sound effects that come with crashes are fitting but probably won\'t be noticed by many. People in the skating environments will shout out commands, requests, and strange comments to other people (\"Last can of lighter fluid,\" says a man trying to start a grill to his buddy), and are at times very amusing. As a whole, Tony Hawk 3 sounds good. Unfortunately, the game can be played through and every level unlocked very quickly--generally, I’d say two or three days. If the player feels ambitious, maybe another two or three weeks will be needed to unlock everything. Not necessarily short, but not as lengthy as it could have been. If you liked the length of the first two, you\'ll be pleased to find that Tony Hawk 3’s slightly bigger and definitely takes more time to complete than its predecessors. Closing Comments: Don\'t get me wrong, it\'s fun to turn on here and there to bust out some tricks, but there just isn’t a whole lot to Tony Hawk 3. I don’t see why everyone\'s so impressed with the huge levels, as all they do is make objectives more drawn-out and complicated. Still, I\'m sure Tony Hawk 4 will have even bigger levels, and to be honest I feel that the series takes a step back with every addition. Yes, I\'d buy it again if I were put in the same store with the same $34.99 price tag. I do have a lot of fun playing and trying to complete every goal (one left right now), but can\'t help but be a touch disappointed considering the amount of anticipation before and during its release.<content> <rating>810<rating> <author>Dane<author> <authoremail>Snoopdawwg22@aol.com<authoremail> <date> - The Realm of Gaming"> <META NAME="description" CONTENT="Realm of Gaming offers video Its frame rate doesn\'t suffer hardly at all, with the small exception of a couple issues in the Los Angeles level. I do have a lot of fun playing and trying to complete every goal (one left right now), but can\'t help but be a touch disappointed considering the amount of anticipation before and during its release.<content> <rating>810<rating> <author>Dane<author> <authoremail>Snoopdawwg22@a</h1><div class="main">The Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater franchise has been one of the most successful, if not the most successful, series in video games over the past five years. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The first thing I\'d like to address is what I think of as the biggest problem with THPS3. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> While the game as a whole can be considered to have nice visuals, there\'s no real graphical flare to be found.
