Luigi\'s Mansion
Superb graphics can\'t save the constant repetitiveness of this one, definitely a disappointment.
I wanted to like this game, I really did, but it doesn\'t have the heart, nor the depth of a typical Nintendo release. Luigi\'s Mansion is clearly a hit-miss situation and only the great graphics save it from being a total disappointment. I would definitely say it\'s worth a rent for the fact you could probably clear this one within a couple of days with some serious playing time.
The story of the game is simple, Mario is missing is a big old mansion with spooks, ghosts and other creepy poltergeists, it\'s up to you to take control of Luigi to rid the mansion of the ghosts and find his brother Mario.
Graphics: There\'s no denying this is a terrific looking title and is certainly a show-off title for Nintendo - in showing the graphic capabilities of the system. There are some sweet lighting and shadow effects with the use of Luigi\'s flashlight throughout the game. It really does give you the feeling of exploring a spooky mansion. You\'ll notice trees with falling leaves blowing in the wind when you look out a window, you\'ll see Luigi\'s reflection in the mirrors and you\'ll see some nice transparency effects when a ghost makes himself known. Luigi himself has never looked better and is totally full of life. It\'s more like watching a cartoon character walk around a house than the standard polygon characters we are used to seeing in most 3D type games. As a whole, graphics get top honors. Now the bad.
ControlGameplay: I admit, I was somewhat intrigued by Luigi\'s Mansion for about the first 20 minutes, then things got monotonous. So it\'s really not that the control is bad, nor it\'s premise, it\'s actually quite intuitive and makes good use of the Nintendo controller. Both the control stick are needed to catch ghosts, and it\'s quite a challenge perfecting it, but it\'s not enough to keep you hooked for long.
The problem lies within the gameplay - it\'s simply far too repetitive for my tastes and will be for any gamer who wants something fresh as they continue to the next level. I personally finished this game in less than a week, that is about 9 hours of total game time, unless you keep getting the crap beat out of you. That is why I simply can\'t recommend this title. The graphics rule, the control is very intuitive, but it\'s the same thing over and over, you catch a ghost, go to the next room, wait for another ghost. Replay value would have increased if Nintendo would have added some mini games, comprehensive puzzle solving or maybe even a multi-player option, but there are no elements of any kind of that sort within Luigi\'s Mansion.
Sound: After being spoiled by the classic music from Super Smash Brothers, Luigi\'s Mansion definitely is a bit stale in the sound department. The orchestrated music is actually very good, but it\'s very sparse throughout the game. And the music that is heard, repeats constantly. Luigi makes some funny sounds during his stay at the mansion. He hums along with the music in-sync with the rhythm and likes to whistle when he gets nervous. Overall, the sound is very good, just not jammed with variety. Wouldn\'t it have been great if Luigi were to hum along with themes from classic NES games like Zelda or Mario Brothers? That would have sweet!
Final Call: A short game like Luigi\'s Mansion is only deserving a short review. I simply can\'t recommend a game that can be completed in a weeks time. Awesome graphics, great sound, short game. Rent it.
The Good And The Bad:
+ Graphics are great. Nintendo style all the way. Luigi looks fantastic.
+ Sound is good, but needs more variety.
- Too short.
- Repetitive.
