1010 John ohioguy24@a GameCube <subtitle>Eternal Darkness: Sanity\'s Requiem<subtitle> <content>Four years in the making = one astounding video game and it\'s only on the Cube... Four long years. That\'s how long Silicon Nights has been working on Eternal Darkness. Amazingly, this game was originally slated to be an N64 title. Thank goodness Nintendo and there buds at Silicon Nights came to their senses and scrapped the N64 version and moved their possible masterpiece to the almighty Gamecube. Eternal Darkness is a massive adventure game that will require some serious playing time and is the deepest most enthralling console game I\'ve ever experienced since Zelda. Gamers without patience will want to go back to Super Smash Brothers Melee without a hitch, but if you\'re a smart, mature, and have some serious time to kill, Sanity\'s Requiem should already be in your library. The story of Sanity\'s Requiem starts out introducing you to a young babe named Alexandra. She just received word that her grandfather was brutally murdered in his multi-million dollar mansion and his body was found morbidly unrecognizable. Alexandra is asked by local authorities to identify her grandfather\'s body and perhaps find answers for herself why this tragedy happened. The game initially starts you out in an eerie mansion reminiscent of the Resident Evil series. At first glance, it seems like your basic adventure. But when you divulge deeper into Sanity\'s Requiem, you\'re in for more than just walking around a creepy old house with astounding graphics. Instead, you\'ll assume the role of 12 different characters each struggling to find out the fate and the secrets of humanity. The game spans through different times throughout history, it\'s like taking a virtual time machine for a spin. Just to name a few, you\'ll take control of a Roman Centurion, a medical doctor from the mid 1700\'s, a courageous Persian dude named Karim from 565A.D, and a sexy servant from Cambodia back in 1150A.D. Each of the 12 characters adventures all mesh with the overall storyline of the mansion in the beginning of the game. The game is a mix of RPG, action, adventure, and psychological elements. This game truly has it all and you seriously need this game in your collection. If you\'re still reading, stop, go buy it now and experience the journey for yourself. Thank you Nintendo. I am not worthy. Graphics: Still doubting the graphic prowess of the Cube? Well forget about it, because four painstaking work by Silicon Nights truly paid off. Eternal darkness offers the best environments I\'ve ever seen since Resident Evil, and in most cases, it\'s actually better. At a solid 60 frames per second, even when things get busy on-screen, you won\'t notice an ounce of slow-down in this baby, this truly is a masterpiece of video gaming. In many cases throughout Eternal Darkness, you\'ll feel like you\'re playing a Tomb Raider game. Exploring through dark caves, voyaging through Egyptian tunnels and many of the labyrinths, are quite reminiscent of Lara Croft\'s adventures. But don\'t think this is Lara\'s game, Sanity\'s Requiem distinguishes itself so much better in every shape and form and it\'s the atmosphere that makes you feel like you\'re really there. For example, during many locations of the game, you wont believe the time spent on the artwork alone. Are those real watermark paintings in the mansion? The carvings, the paintings, the sculptures, everything you see looks like something you\'d visualize in a museum of natural history. And the lighting effects also deserve an honorable mention as it\'s the best I\'ve seen since Resident Evil. The draw distance in Sanity\'s Requiem is basically insane. You can see an absurd far distance ahead of you and it almost gives you a sense of a virtual reality. And if you played Resident Evil, you know the backgrounds and environments are pre-rendered. Meaning, you walk around, and the room lies \"motionless\" until you go to new location. Sometimes that can cause some camera and angle issues as most of us know. Sanity\'s Reqiuem is a whole new ball of wax. The environments move along with your character. And it\'s truly a incredible technologic feat considering the amount of detail there is. Since the environments stick with your movements and your location, you won\'t have any issues of not seeing what\'s in front of you or near you. It\'s difficult to explain on paper, but once you move your young lady in the beginning of the game, get ready for a whole new experience. The player models, while not quite as detailed as the characters from Resident Evil on the Cube, are still very well done. Some characters look better than others. You\'ll notice a few blocky textures when the camera gets up close to their features, but as a whole, you can\'t complain since everything else is virtually magnificent. The actual animations of the characters are mesmerizing and move so realistically and flawlessly, you won\'t believe your eyes. The 60 frames per second really struts out when you see the characters smooth an fluent movements. Whether you\'re walking, sneaking around a corner or finishing of a skeleton dude with your sword, this game is as fun to look at as it is to play. The blood factor plays a role within Eternal Darkness, and although there is a lot of it, it\'s definitely not as realistic looking as the other aspects of the game. But be that as it may, the blood effects add another layer of realism to the already realistic happenings on-screen. There are also some added tasty visuals when you experience the magical effects. When you cast your magick, (don\'t ask, they just spell it that way) you\'ll be spell bounded with the particle effects and the magical colors that whisk throughout the air and you\'ll be enticed with realistic flames of fire lighting up in your characters eyes. If one could describe everything this game offers visually, you could basically write a book about it, that is how good, and how much this game truly offers. Truly a new watermark in video gaming technology. Control: As stated in the graphics department, the pre-rendered environments that have become a staple for the Resident Evil series, is becoming second rate once you take control of your characters in Eternal Darkness. Instead of having pre-set camera angles, the camera sticks with you, along with the environment, giving Eternal Darkness a more of a \"virtual reality\" kind of feel. It\'s just a fresh new experience and only Devil May Cry and Silent Hill 2 are doing this same routine. Moving your characters are as easy as picking up the controller. You press one way, they go in that direction, period. Once again, Capcom needs to rethink their control scheme, as this is simply the way to go. The control is tight, and it will be needed in many parts of the game. Most of the characters will be using swords, or some type of shooting mechanism to defend against the nasties. When getting attacked, you can lock on to the enemy by pressing and holding \"right trigger\" and swinging your weapon with the \"A\" Button. It works perfectly. You can determine which part of the body you\'d like to strike by pressing up, left right or down. Therefore, if you want to cut off the mean \'ol skeleton\'s head, you press up and \"A\" and you\'ll swing for his head. Want him to lose a left arm? Press left and swing and he\'ll be saying goodbye with his feet. Sanity\'s Requiem comes into play throughout the game. To keep your \"sanity\" , or basically keeping in focus, you need to play well. You can lose your sanity by losing health, or just being overwhelmed with the happenings on screen. Losing sanity can cause hallucinations and disruptions for your characters. For you the gamer, it will make you downright dizzy and even disorientated. The camera becomes more erratic from it\'s normal sequence, and it really makes it harder to control and is very disruptive for you as the screen might start to shake and the controller rumbles. Losing your sanity does play a factor in the gameplay, so if you want to keep the screen stable and your controller at ease, play well my friends. Expect some significant puzzle solving in Eternal Darkness, although most of the puzzles are pretty simplistic, but mostly just time consuming, but very creative nonetheless. The solutions are always near by, so make sure you look at every nook. The rest of the game is mostly exploring and actionadventure. You\'re doing a lot of walking, running and searching. The combat system works perfectly as stated above. Basically this game has it all, you won\'t want to put the controller down. Sound: Simply fantastic sound and uses the GameCube\'s Pro Logic System\'s II to the max - easily the best sounding game the system has seen yet. The orchestrated music is plentiful and fits the perfect gothic mood of every situation. The characters voices are even well done, no second rate actors here. If you have a good system, definitely crank this baby up, unless you have neighbors with low tolerance levels. Final Call: Forget what you know about Mario and friends at Nintendo. Eternal Darkness is the most absorbing time sucker you\'ll ever lay your hands on. You will be soaked in by it\'s superb graphics, excellent storyline, terrific gameplay and sweet sound. Zelda is around the corner, but until then, this is a good enough reason to own a Gamecube. Thanks Nintendo. The Good And The Bad: + Best graphics I\'ve ever seen. Period. + The game plays just as good as the graphics look. - You\'ll lose sleep playing it too much.<content> <rating>1010<rating> <author>John<author> <authoremail>ohioguy24@aol.com<authoremail> The 60 frames per second really struts out when you see the characters smooth an fluent movements. - You\'ll lose sleep playing it too much.<content> <rating>1010<rating> <author>John<author> <authoremail>ohioguy24@aol.com<authoremail> <date> Review<br>Eternal Darkness: Sanity\'s Requiem<subtitle> <content>Four years in the making = one astounding video game and it\'s only on the Cube...
