Beach Spikers
Babes in bikinis playing volleyball on a beach, sounds good to me Sega...
GeneralSummary: Holy Schnikes! What a surprise! I knew it would be good, but Sega really hit the bulls eye with Beach Spikers and it\'s only on the Gamecube, not sure why but Gamecube fans will be happy that\'s for sure!
Beach Spikers is a 2 on 2 volleyball game with hot chicks! It may be a Dead Or Alive Volleyball warm-up when that comes out, but even with that game in our midst, I don\'t think Beach Spikers will be surpassed. It has amazing graphics, the girls look fantastic and the gameplay is simplistic, but challenging and very intuitive at the same time. Even better you can play with 3 other people if you have four Gamecube controllers. The game offers a deep World Tour mode, a VS Mode for multiplayers and a tutorial mode. All in all, it will keep you happy and is the best 2-4 player game I\'ve seen in a long time.
Gameplay: I need to make a point, I really don\'t enjoy playing volleyball, but I think I\'m in love with Beach Spikers. The gameplay is so tight you\'ll think you\'re watching one of those beach volleyball shows on ESPN. The game feels tight and controls brilliantly with the already sweet Gamecube controller. It\'s a game anyone can jump into but takes skill to perfect. I honestly got sucked in the first minute and played this game an entire afternoon, about 6 hours worth and never got tired of it.
Amazingly, only 2 buttons are used to play this game. The A and B button. Sounds crazy, but these two little buttons can do a lot. Beach Spikers relies on perfect timing and combination button pressing and it works perfect. The amazing simplicity of spiking the ball feels like your driving a bike with training wheels, it only takes a little while to catch on what you need to do. The hardest part about the game is playing good defense and blocking spikes. You\'re actually better off playing back instead of going for blocks at the net. Play back, and you\'ll have a better chance at getting points.
The gameplay is much like Sega\'s Virtua Tennis, the computer determines the reaction and best shot you do determined by when you press your button and where your player is standing. So if you need to run for the ball and it\'s nearly out of your reach, you\'ll have a weak hit back. But if you\'re right where you need to be you\'ll hit it harder.
The ball\'s targeting system is sweet. You can tell exactly where the ball will go by a target icon that comes up every relay. It\'s up to you to get there and press the right button at the right time. Both A and B toss it up for your teammate so you can setup a spike. A power meter than incurs so be sure to get your timing down on that too. The control stick somewhat controls the direction of your shot, press it left, and it will go toward the left side of the sand, press it right and toward you, and it will be close to the right side close to the net.
The game plays fast and furiously and some of the spikes and moves are a bit crazy ,but the arcade style fits perfectly and this is now my favorite game on the cube.
The World Tour Mode is the meat and potatoes of Beach Spikers. You work your way up and earn attribute points for your created teammate. You can dress her in your swimsuit of choice, choose her face, choose her sunglasses (if any) and even choose what country you want to play for. It\'s not the most in depth create-a-player ever, but it\'s not the worst ever. I would have liked to alter the weight or height of my girls, they basically all have the same bodies, luckily they\'re all good ones too. The World Tour Mode lets you increase your attributes by winning and playin well as a team. The better your play, the more stuff you get.
As stated above, this is a terrific multi player game and is perfect when you got buds over. It supports 4 player action, so if you don\'t already, buying some additional controllers are more than worth it if you plan on playing Beach Spikers religiously like I do.
The arcade mode is a bit different from World Tour mode. The biggest difference is that you control both of your players instead of just one. Its a bit easier having a computer controlled or human teammate as you don\'t need to worry as much about who you\'re controlling. But even when controlling 2 players at once, it\'s amazing how smoothly Sega made it work.
Graphics: Bright, crisp, fun to watch and looks like your typical Sega arcade style game. The stages look amazing and look at that sand, it looks like the Florida Keys to boot. Depending on the stage, you can play at different hours of the day. Playing at dusk looks amazing and the use of lighting really comes into play as the orange sunset in the distance really looks real. The sky schemes alone are the best I\'ve seen on a console video game, I thought Devil May Cry had some good ones, but take a look at the clouds in Beach Spikers and you can\'t help to be in awe.
The ladies in Beach Spikers are not quite up to speed of the babes from Dead Or Alive, but in terms of how real they look, you won\'t be disappointed. With the 20 different countries represented, there is a wide variety of bodacious bikini babes to be had. Their skin tones and fleshy tans looks pretty darn good. Most have the same body styles, but their faces, features on their suits and animations are all different from the next girl. There are some fantastic scenes between plays and after matches. They\'ll give each other high fives, jump around like monkeys Most of the males out there will appreciate the frequent visuals of them hugging each other at the end of a match with their hands on each other\'s behinds. And it looks real to boot.
The different locations look amazing all licensed by real companies. Sega even got Nintendo\'s permission to put in a \"Nintendo Stage\". You\'ll see big blown up GameCube balloons, Nintendo mascots and logs all surrounding the beach. Others include a Sega stage overlooked by a blown up Sonic and a sweet Coca Cola stage with all the trademark colors and logos that you expect with any Coca Cola trademark. There really isn\'t anything not to like about the graphics. Women in bikinis, beaches, volleyball, sounds good to me.
Sound: I get so enthralled by the graphics and gameplay, I really don\'t notice the sound too much. The announcer pretty much keeps to himself and for what he does say, he\'s a bit cheesie and kinda scares me at times, but luckily he doesn\'t talk much. The ladies are pretty quiet too, between court changes and after celebrations, quick conversations like \"good job\", or \"you need to improve your game\" might occasionally happen, must most of the ladies keep to themselves. The music is not the best, standard guitar riffs from Sega, it\'s nothing special.
Final Call: Hey, this is what I\'m talking about, chicks, bikinis and volleyball. Even if you don\'t like volleyball, consider Beach Spikers, I didn\'t think I\'d like it, and I still can\'t get enough of it. I have to say, as a one player game, it can get a bit dry over time. It\'s easily a much better game when you have buddies to play with as it supports up to 4 people. With the exception of the one player issues, this is one of the freshest most surprising titles I\'ve seen for awhile. Buy it.
The Good And The Bad:
+ Sweet graphics. Sweet ladies, the sand looks amazing and the locations are great.
+ Gameplay is tight but simplistic.
+ 1-4 player gameplay.
- Sound is just average. Music is lame.
- One player mode can get tiresome after a while.
