Dreamcast Preview: Unreal Tournament
Unreal Tournament was one of PC’s hottest games last year, is now making its
way to the Dreamcast. There were many rumors on the subject but it was never confirmed until due to the Dreamcast not having enough RAM. Well that all changed as our good old buddies at Infogrames said we can do it! So there you have it Dreamcast is going to be spinning UT and that will happen real quick. What major changes will we see in the DC version? Lots of new stuff and lots of stuff cut out. The real changes come from the actual game itself. Maps will be cropped up some as to keep the gameplay fast and furious, since the DC is limited to only 24 megs of ram, which is quite paltry. Parts of the game like the Assault and Domination were cut out as well. Which makes me wish Sega had packed in at least 8 more megs of RAM, Also the amount of max players that can play the game online is 8! Why 8? Well the PC has more power (mainly RAM) to handle all the information but the Dreamcast lacks this. Also from what I have seen so far the quality of the textures were not as good as those on the PC and PS2 version. With all that’s been cut out will you really want to but this game again, or for that matter prefer to buy the PS2 version? Well the Dreamcast has some new Dreamcast friendly maps. Also the big reason to buy the Dreamcast version over the PS2 is because the PS2 version will not ship with online play, which is why we all want UT in the first place. I am not sure about the ability to play PC owners but it looks like a good possibility at the moment. Finally from what I have heard the game controls fine with the DC Controller and will have support for the keyboard and mouse for us PC enthusiast. Expect Unreal Tournament to be in stores about the same time as its PS2 counterpart in November. |
