Sega Dreamcast Reviews Marvel vs. Capcom 2 So many Characters to choose from, has Capcom turned Sizzler? Let me start off by saying that I am not a Street Fighter Purist. I enjoyed when Street Fighter went 3d with EX and I welcomed the addition of the New World Warriors in Double Impact. I believe that characters in games should change with time. With change in characters there should also be a change in playing styles and controls to fit the new generation. Who wants to play a revamped version of Street Fighter 2 for 6 years anyway, not me sir, not this game reviewer! I want something brand new every time I step into the air-conditioned coin-slot/console arena. With that being said, I begin my review. Have you ever played a fighting game and said, "Damn, where's the beef? There's only 6 characters to choose from!?! Well, that won't happen here with…(drum roll and cue booming omnipotent voice) Marvel Vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, with over 50 characters to choose from, you will never be lonely again. In fact, this game will spoil you so much; that you'll probably never look at a fighting game that has less than 30 playable characters ever again. However, what are the repercussions of having a game with such a large cast of selectable characters? The first problem I have encountered is a metamorphoses takes place in people who play the game. People of all ages, races, and sexes are affected by this epidemic. Once a player reaches the character selection screen, they begin to turn into little old ladies at a salad bar. "Ummm's and ah's" are often heard coming from the players as they begin to ponder what kind of vegetable goes along with Juggernaut. The second problem I faced is the immortal question of can there ever be enough characters to choose from. When I finally got a grip on all the characters from the game, I found myself praying to the Dreamcast Gods for more secret characters to show up. I mean what about the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure characters, aren't they good enough to be in this game too? Why Dreamcast Gods, why? But who are these characters that occupy this game that u talk of so candidly? Now if I told you who was in the game, I would have to tell everyone and that's a lot of people to tell. So I won't give away all the characters, but lets just say it's just about everyone from every "Vs" Capcom fighting game made. Ok so there's a plethora of characters whoop-de-do, what about game play? Game play, you say, Game Play? HA! You truly are a simple naive to think Capcom would slip in that department. Game play as the kids say now a days is explosive, violent, and down right heart pounding. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine this: A peaceful siren setting upon the rooftops of buildings in mid-afternoon as the clock tower strikes 3 in the background, the window blows a light wispy breeze around your head as if pushing your troubles and worries away, then suddenly you hear a voice say Go! You are bewildered by this but pay it no mind for you are in a relaxing blissful trance. Then suddenly again something happens…GIANT SUPERHEROS AND STREET FIGHTER CHARACTERS START FLYING ALL OVER THE PLACE SHOOTING LAZER BEAMS AND SPIDER WEBS THAT ARE GOING EVERYWHERE, ROCKS AND ASTEROIDS START FALLING FROM THE SKY, FIREBALLS AND JUMP KICKS ARE BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS AND YOU'RE JUMPING AND DODGING AND ROLLING ALL OVER THE PLACE JUST TO STAY ALIVE WHILE EXPLOSIONS ARE GOING OFF ALL AROUND…then, all of a sudden it stops and you open your eyes. That my friends was just a sample of round 1 of a 2 round fight of great proportions, but in the world of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, it's common place. Nevertheless, nay do I say to the fact that this game is perfect, far from it. There are many things that I would have shot down in the brainstorming portion of production in this game's life. For one, the ability to easily juggle your opponents. If you were unlucky enough to waste a coin against these juggling jerks, then you understand what I am talking about. Virtually taking no skill in keeping an opponent up in the air and off balance so that there is no chance for a counter attack, all that can be done is sit back and watch and hope that the jerk misses a button. What fun is that? But luckily for the people who feel no need to be cheap ass, there are still many chances to beat them fair and square. Another portion of the game I disagree with is the ability to bring your assist characters out as much as you want without limit. This causes the game to be quiet slow and boring sometimes with Mexican Standoffs of blocking and sending in your helping character to attack for minutes on end. Overall I think this game is a true classic and hopefully in the near future we will be seeing more of these huge fighting game but hopefully without the annoying music. It seems the future is so bright over at Capcom , they gotta wear shades. By: Ian Nathanson |
