Microsoft Xbox Preview:
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is the up and coming title of the distinguished and controversial fighting franchise from Midway Games. This is the 7th fighting game of the series, excluding the side-games. Planned to be the end of the series on current-generation consoles, MK Armageddon will pave the way to allow for a fresh start with the next game.

Every character from Mortal Kombat will be returning for Armageddon with a total of over 60 playable characters in the roster, not to mention the create-a-character feature. To name a few; Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Reptile, Kabal, Kintaro, Shang Tsung, and the thunder god, Raiden will make their appearance. This should be a dream come true for any Mortal Kombat fan. Some obscure characters have been resurrected as well, such as the bloody skeleton, Meat, from Mortal Kombat 4. Even these characters will apparently have their own story line.

With a new game will come some things that we haven’t seen yet in a Mortal Kombat game.

Arial combat is a new facet in Armageddon and should add considerable depth to the gameplay. Breakers and parrys will also be able to be performed during mid-air combat. Characters will be able to linger in the air while trying to take each other out.

Kreate-A-Fighter should be similar to the create-a-character feature of wrestling games. In addition to the general characteristics and appearance, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon will allow the player to choose which moves and profile the newly created character will have.

Konquest mode should be more reminiscent of what Shaolin Monks was and not so analogous to Konquest of Deception. To be noted, Taven and Daegon will also be playable characters in this game.

It’s the end of the traditional fatality. The Mortal Kombat Team has decided to revamp the fatalities. Instead of having pre-determined fatalities, players will piece together their own custom fatality. Don’t fret… Purists will still be able to put together moves to create some familiar fatalities of old.

Mortal Kombat: Deception had puzzle kombat and chess kombat mini-games. Armageddon will have a kart racing game included within.

It looks like the PlayStation 2 version of the game will come in 2 flavors; a standard edition and 4 different premium editions. The premium edition will have a retail price of 49.95 and include: a full version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, over 60 minutes of bonus video, and an animation cell cover art autographed by none-other than MK franchise co-creator, Ed Boon. The video will include a history of fatalities.

The PS2 and Xbox versions have a projected release date of Oct. 9th. In Europe it is planned to be a week later than that of those versions. There is additionally a Nintendo Wii version in the works with a release date for the first quarter of next year.

This will be the end of Mortal Kombat on current-generation consoles. Let’s hope Mortal Kombat: Armageddon shapes up to be a killer fighting game.
