Pokemon X and Y Introduces New Features
The upcoming additions to the popular Pokémon franchise, Pokemon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS, have recently showcased several features not present in previous games.
The first of the new features is Mega Evolution. Unlike normal evolution, Mega Evolution is limited to only certain Pokemon during battles by using special Mega Stones, after which the Pokemon reverts back to its original form. Mega Evolution will cause large stat increases and may also change a Pokemon’s type and abilities. Players will now have to formulate new strategies revolving around utilizing Mega Evolving Pokemon or countering them. Some Pokemon that have been confirmed to be able to Mega Evolve include Mewtwo, Lucario, and Blaziken.
The Mega Stone used to Mega Evolve Blaziken is not normally found in the games; a special Torchic with the Hidden Ability Speed Boost will be distributed through Wi-Fi starting October 12, 2013, for a limited time. This Torchic will carry the Blazikenite needed for Mega Evolution and, once players manage to evolve it into Blaziken, can make full use of Mega Blaziken in battle.
Another feature introduced is Super Training. Super Training is a way for players to train their Pokemon when not in battle, using different activities to improve their Pokemons’ base stats. The activities make use of the 3DS touch screen; one activity has players facing Pokemon-shaped Balloon Bots and trying to shoot balls into the opponents’ goal. For players who prefer a more casual method of raising Pokemon, they can use Core Training; Core Training has players setting up training bags earned from Super Training activities for their Pokemon to use. The Pokemon will work on training themselves and raise stats on their own.
Pokemon X and Y will be released worldwide on October 12, 2013.
