Motor City Comic Con 2017 - Recap
Motor City Comic Con. It was held May 19-21, 2017 (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The convention featured a variety of vendors, comic guests, media guests, and many guests cosplaying their favorite characters. This is a massive event and there were over 55,000 in attendance over the course of the three days. There were 38 panels held throughout the convention. Tickets were priced at $25 for Friday, $40 for Saturday, $30 for Sunday, and $75 for the 3-day pass. I was able to attend Comic Con this year (Saturday and Sunday) and last attended this comic convention in 2014.
There were 47 media guests in attendance including Amy Jo Johnson, Sting (Wrestler), Ron Perlman, Martin Starr, Michael Rooker, John Barrowman, Shannon Elizabeth, Sean Gunn, LeVar Burton, Amy Dumas (aka Lita), and Wil Wheaton. Attendees could get autographs and/or photos with their favorite stars at an additional cost. There were various panels with the media guests spread throughout the weekend.
One of the actors that I was able to meet was James Remar. Remar has had a long-spanning acting career in films and TV such as The Warriors (Ajax), Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (Lord Raiden), The Vampire Diaries (Giuseppe Salvatore), and Dexter (Harry Morgan). Remar also plays Frank Gordon on Gotham. He has also done acting in some video games including Killzone 3 and Destiny.
Comic guests included Ali Cantarella, Andrew Day, AngelSVisionS, Audra Olivia, Ben Miller, Billy Tucci, Michael Calandra, Randy Stewart, Warwick Johnson, Cora Talkington, Heads Up Studios a.k.a Jay Brant, Kyle Baker, and many more. The convention consistently has a lot of amazing artwork and creations that are created by the comic guests. So much so that it was hard to choose what to purchase while there.
A vast amount of the comic con attendees came as their favorite comic characters. Some of those included Halo Master Chief, numerous Star Wars characters including Stormtroopers, Ghostbusters, Hellboy, Wonder Woman, Juggernaut, the Joker, Harley Quinn, Predator, Batman, Deadpool, Power Rangers, Jason, and Spider-Man to name a few. The Cosplay Contest was Saturday at 5:00pm. It was a great opportunity to see all of the enthusiasm and effort that people put into costume.
On Friday, Ron Perlman had the ceremonial first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game. Motor City Comic Con also had a screening for The Space Between: A Film by Amy Jo Johnson.
Motor City Comic Con had a variety of vendors this year. Vendors had comic books, Pop Vinyl, T-Shirts, video games, vintage jewelry, and convention promotional items for sale. There were concessions / food available for purchase.
Motor City Comic Con 2017 was filled with more than couple hundred comic guests, almost 50 media guests, and one hundred and forty-one exhibitors. I had a great time at this year's Motor City Comic Con and look forward to 2018!
Disclosure: I received one press pass to cover Motor City Comic Con 2017.
