Focus Home Interactive and Dontnod Collaborating on Vampyr
Game-development studio Focus Home Interactive and publisher Dontnod have recently announced they are partnering together to work on a game. This game is Vampyr, an RPG for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC.
Vampyr takes place in early twentieth-century Britain. Spanish flu is ravaging the country and vampires have risen amidst the chaos. The protagonist, a high-ranking military surgeon named Jonathan E. Reid, has recently been transformed into a vampire after returning home from the frontlines. Now, he has to deal with the thirst for blood that comes with being a vampire.
The developers have stated that hunting will require careful thought and planning. Players will need to observe potential victims, studying their habits and relationships with others, while planning on their approach: seduction, change of daily routine, isolating them in a dark alley, and many other possibilities. Hunting a victim removes them from the game forever and the developers claim that the deaths will impact the world. Ingesting blood will also unlock new powers for Jonathan to use.
Jonathan will also need to engage in combat at times, with foes like other vampires and vampire hunters. The game uses real-time combat and Jonathan can use melee combat, ranged shooting, and vampiric powers. Health is also used to fuel vampiric abilities, so players must be careful when using them, lest they end up weaker in a bad situation. To make things easier, players can make use of the game’s crafting system, using loot found from corpses or exploration to make new tools, weapons, and ammunition.
Vampyr is currently set for a 2017 release.
