Victoria Atkin Interview
Assassin's Creed Syndicate
Victoria Atkin is a British actress who stars in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Syndicate releases on October 23, 2015. This date is also significant for Atkin as it marks the twentieth anniversary of Hollyoaks, where she got her start after graduating from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Victoria Atkin also had a recurring role on The Girl's Guide to Depravity. Her upcoming project is the film, The Downside of Bliss. Additionally, Atkin's novel, London Love, was recently published in February of 2015.
Could you tell us about your background getting into acting and how that helped prepare you for the role in Assassin's Creed?
I was very fortunate to have spent a long time in education. I did an undergraduate degree in Performing Arts at The University of Chichester and then went on to further my studies at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in Swiss Cottage, London. Both establishments trained me in very unique ways. With this training and my inherent love to "play" combined with a very vivid imagination Evie Frye came to life.
How did you come across the opportunity to be Evie in AC: Syndicate?
My wonderful manager Cristy Coors Beasley submitted me for the role and I was requested to self tape for another audition... This time for a video game. We have her to thank!
Nearly six months of acting for the game must've been a lot of work. Have you done motion capture before? What were some of the challenges with this kind of performance?
It was a lot of work but it was also so much fun. It was my first time in motion capture and thankfully I took to it with ease. I was always that little girl who couldn't just walk somewhere, I loved to run! If there were any challenges it was probably having to ignore the small camera in front of your main eye line on the helmet during the scenes.
Did you do a full performance with motion capture, where your voice and body movements were recorded at the same time?
I spent a lot of time in the voiceover booth for in game dialogue after we completed the Motion Capture, but all the cinematic scenes we recorded the voice, facial and motion capture at the same time.
Did you also record your voice in a traditional booth? What were some of the challenges you faced in this setting?
Yes. The challenge was to find the essence and soul of Evie that I had created on the motion capture floor and allow her to be fully expressed just through my voice. It didn't take long to channel and was interesting to have only this tool to express her entire array of emotions.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate Story Trailer
The Assassin's Creed franchise has a huge following, both male and female. With this being one of the first games that brings in a female assassin, save for AC Liberation, what were your thoughts when you started this venture?
My thoughts were this is going to be another step forward for Girl Power!
Moving into the realm of video game voice-overs can be quite a challenge to capture these sort of characters. From your experiences working with the AC Ubisoft team on the Syndicate project, what can you say has been the most rewarding with conquering the hurdle of making Evie come to life (and kick butt while doing it)?
Making the video game was a hugely male dominated arena so it was interesting to be the only woman at times, personally I think the outpour of positive support from the Assassin's Creed Fan Community towards the introduction of Evie into the franchise is hugely rewarding.
Have you gotten a chance to enjoy some of the Assassin's Creed games that have come out as predecessors to Syndicate? If so, what were some of the aspects that you enjoyed most?
I have played black flag and unity a little bit. Like Evie I'm a bit of a bookworm so it's hard to tear me away from a good read.
What were some of the greatest memories from working on this project?
We had a lot of laughs. The other actors that play the historical characters in the game were wonderful to work with. I really also enjoyed living in Toronto for the most part of this year!
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
