Sega Dreamcast
The Dreamcast enjoyed strong sales in its first year of release, becoming Sega's most successful hardware launch ever. In the United States alone, a record 300,000 units were perordered, which amounted to 500,000 consoles sold in just two weeks (225,000 of which were sold on the first 24 hours which became a video game record until the PlayStation 2 launched a year later). Sales however would take a dramatic turn for the worst with the PS2's hype and eventual launch in late 2000. Sales fell through the floor and didn't improve Christmas 2000 despite Sega's strong lineup of 2nd gen titles (compared to the lackluster PS2 launch titles) and SegaNet finally being launched, the Dreamcast's online gaming network. Notable games that were released include Jet Grind Radio and Shenmue. By January 2001 Sega had officially discontinued the system. Its last US title was released in early 2002 and its online gaming network finally closed in late 2003 bring to a close one of the most historically pioneering systems the gaming world would ever see. |
